Why You Keep Waking Up at 3 A.M.
And What Finally Helped
If you’ve been waking up between 3 a.m. and 5 a.m. every night, staring at the ceiling doing math on how many hours you have left, you’re not imagining it. And it’s not “just stress.”
What Actually Helped
I tried the usual advice first — cutting caffeine, a stricter bedtime, even melatonin for a few nights. I didn’t see the results I needed. They just didn’t touch the 3 a.m. wake-ups.
I didn’t want something that would knock me out or leave me groggy the next day. I just wanted something that would help me settle down at night.
That search led me to magnesium glycinate, a form of magnesium bound to the amino acid glycine. Research on magnesium and sleep is still developing, but some human studies suggest magnesium supplementation may support sleep quality in some adults. One placebo-controlled study involving magnesium bisglycinate found a modest improvement in insomnia symptoms among adults who reported poor sleep.
What I liked was that it fit easily into the kind of nighttime routine I wanted:
- Nighttime Relaxation — supports relaxation as part of a calming evening routine.
- Nervous-System Support — magnesium supports normal nervous-system and muscle function.
- Restful-Sleep Support — research suggests magnesium supplementation may support sleep quality in some adults.
What I Began to Notice
It wasn’t an overnight change. But over the next couple of weeks, I started sleeping for longer stretches. When I did wake up, I often found it easier to settle again instead of lying there watching the clock.
That was the difference for me. I didn’t feel “knocked out.” My nights simply began to feel calmer and less like a fight.
This was my personal experience. Individual experiences and results will vary.
If this sounds like your nights, I understand. I’ve been there too.
Here’s what I’ve been using.
